Recognizing this and the importance of maintaining physical abilities as we age, Fresh River Healthcare in East Windsor has invested in an active restorative program and equipment known as NeuroGym, available to inpatients as well as in the outpatient setting.

With a March 2018 program launch, Fresh River Healthcare will be one of just a few skilled nursing facilities in Connecticut with the training, equipment, personnel and community supports to offer a dedicated and comprehensive program to support patients with Parkinson disease (PD). Fresh River is uniquely qualified to offer comprehensive PD services, having assembled a multi-disciplinary team of clinical professionals.

Research shows that exercise helps daily symptoms and slows the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. Beat Parkinson’s Today is an exercise program developed by Michelle Hespeler, a person with Parkinson’s (PWP) and is being offered at Fresh River in East Windsor. Classes are available to residents and members of the public. The classes encourage brain stimulation, challenge balance and stability and teach proper technique and form – all in an encouraging group setting.

As of March 2018, Fresh River Healthcare is now providing a specialized and cutting edge Parkinson’s Disease therapy known as the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Therapy (LSVT). This approach aims to address the “internal” aspects of Parkinson’s disease symptoms, leading to significant functional improvements. LSVT improves the voice and speech of individuals with Parkinson’s disease by treating the physical pathology associated with a disordered voice.

Fresh River announced the creation of a Parkinson’s Disease Support Group to be held at the center in East Windsor. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. The meeting is held on the third Wednesday of the month at 1:30 pm. The meeting is supported by the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) with structure provided by a local Program Director for the organization.
